The annual Sue Rose Summer Institute: Lyric I and II based on Dr. Louise Cowan’s genre theory for teachers and administrators, particularly those seeking Cowan Center™ certification in order to serve in a Cowan Academy®. (CPE Credit)

Lyric Tradition I traces major paradigm shifts in lyric form from the ancients to Yeats. Although not English-language poetry originally, the Psalms in translation are included in this class because of their influence on English-language lyric poetry and their importance in setting lyric modes.

Lyric Tradition II poets studied typically include: T.S. Elliot, Ezra Pound, poets of the Fugitives group, poets of the Harlem Renaissance, Robert Hayden, Richard Wilbur, Stanley Kunitz, Randall Jarrell, Jorie Graham, Wallace Stevens, Derek Walcott, Charles Wright, Kay Ryan, Natasha Tretheway, Seamus Heaney, Nikky Finney, and Sarah Cortez.
