December 8, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm$30
WITH CIVIC & THOUGHT LEADERS OF DALLAS
What does our city want to be? On the 40th anniversary of the Dallas Institute’s book Imagining Dallas, we ask this question once again.
“What kind of city is being made within our midst? How do our actions affect this making? A city is aconstruction and, with grace, a work of art. It is thenatural habitation of humankind: it holds us, framesour hopes and desires, and shapes our destiny. To‘imagine’ the city in which we live is to participateactively in its making.”
– Gail Thomas, Introduction to Imagining Dallas (1982)
What kind of city does Dallas aspire to be in the future? Are we – or can we be – a “world-class city”? (And what does that oft-repeated phrase even mean?) Forty years ago, the Dallas Institute published a small book of essays, authored by Fellows of the Dallas Institute and bearing the title Imagining Dallas. In it, Louise Cowan – one of the six founders of the Dallas Institute – wrote: “”In my astonished imagination . . . , I can see Dallas – just at the moment when one senses the loss of American greatness–giving form to an American Renaissance.” We have perhaps reached just this moment of rebirth – or at least, a moment when many of us are longing for the rebirth of our culture.
Today’s Dallas may fairly be described as the most interesting city in the most important country in the world. With an influx of new residents, our city enjoys much new energy, imagination and ferment even as it also retains many of its traditional advantages – and challenges. What happens in the coming decade will shape the future of our metropolis for decades to come. Are we condemned to be a sprawling city, one that lacks a center or an identity apart from affluence? Or does our city have a soul – derived from its history, its diverse populace and its vibrant allure to newcomers? Imagining Dallas is a lecture series featuring citizens of Dallas coming together to envision and shape the future of our city.
