Since the early 1980s, the Dallas Institute has conducted conferences aimed at answering the question “What Makes a City?” and the result has been a rich tapestry of urban wisdom. Beginning this year, in our uncertain political and cultural climate, we will alter the question to make it focus on the common denominator of the city, state, and republic: “What Makes a Citizen?” This first annual program, under the direction and sponsorship of Institute Fellow and Lifetime Board Member Dr. Nancy Cain Marcus, will take an innovative approach to the question, weaving together Constitutional law, live DJ music scoring, theater, and spoken word poetry. The program will be crafted by prominent artists and scholars. Their considerable talents will aim at exploring, in ways that will inspire, illuminate, and entertain, the crucial role
of the citizen in a healthy democracy.
