Local-Global: India

The Ancient-Modern Country

Featuring Dr. Jaina Sanga

Taj Mahal The Institute's Au Courant group continues its Local-Global series--open to everyone--highlighting the global bounty of our local scene. This semester: the subcontinent of India, second most populous country in the world and seventh largest in terms of geographical size.

More than an exotic country, India today is a complex nation where ancient temples and monuments coexist with oil refineries and nuclear power plants. India's big cities have some of the costliest real estate in the world, yet the country's illiteracy rate is high, and a large percentage of the population lives in poverty. Using texts, visual images, and music, Dr. Sanga will introduce us to the art and artistic traditions, myths, social customs, religious festivals, cuisine, and other aspects of her homeland.
